Taylor Swift by KarenNicole97 Taylor Swift by KarenNicole97
for Traditional-Art-Only's Group Challenge "Portrait" [link]
Took me 4 days to do this..I think the over all work time was something like 5 1/2 hours. Longest drawing I've ever done. haha and probably one of the best.

I was jamming to her new song Begin Again while finishing this. :D

What do y'all think? Does the left side of her hair need more work? I can't decide if I'm happy with it or not. lol

Anyhow, tools of the trade: kneaded eraser, paper blender, 2H, 2, and paintbrush...

great work! I see that you are really good at doing hair! something you can train in your sketching is to go deeper in the shadows of the face. It will make your artwork get more deepness and it will feel more alive! :)

This is great! Portraits and hair are some of the most difficult things to draw, and you've done wonderfully. I can definitely tell it's T-Swift right off the bat ;) The only thing I could say, is get some softer pencils, so that you can add darker values and get more contrast to make some of her features really pop! Overall, this is great :)

Thank you!! what pencils would you recommend? I've only been drawing for 2 months, so all of this is very new to me. :)

No problem :) I use Derwent or Staedtler. And I would recommend getting a wide range of values. HB is the middle, then to get harder lead that will give lighter shades, you go into the H range. 2H, 4H, 6H, you get it. ;) To get more contrast, and darker shades with softer lead, you head into the B. 2B, 4B, 6B. Also, I highly recommend getting an ebony pencil. Ebony will give you the darkest shade any pencil can, so it is very useful for pure black areas ;) I hope this helped :D

Thanks for the help!! :) I have some derwent pencils, but I don't have them in all the different sizes. I have several ebony pencils and some charcoal. :)

great I'm sure you will be great... Just try to make your shadows more dark and it will be great.. or try to use STEADLER or FABER CASTEL pencils.. good luck ;)

Nice work!!
Hair is so hard to draw.. But you did a very good job! It looks great!

To know if you're happy with it, you should put the drawing away as soon as you finish it. Then look at it the next day and you will instantly know if you are happy with it or not!
I do this with my drawings and it always works for me :D

Also, if you want to check your drawings on mistakes or something, you can hold it in front of a mirror. You'll see if you try it :D

Keep up the good work!

Yeah....after I looked at it a few days later I was pretty happy with it!

I did that a lot throughout the drawing...it helps a lot. :)

You should join my group Artist-Tips, it seems you know a lot about drawing. :)

This is amazing.. <3 I love the way you drew her hair. So wavy and perfect. Her skin looks so soft and young, I like that about her. Her expression makes her look... Hm.. What's the word.. Mysterious? But at the same time she looks young and innocent<3
Her eyes. Omg her eyes! So bright. Even in black and white, you drew them so amazingly. So life-like.
Great work. I'd love to see some more Taylor Swift art from you. You draw her so well! ^-^ <3

This is definitely, by far, your best work. I've always found that patience is a major contributor in my drawings. In 2011 and early 2012, I was spending 2-3 days on each drawing, and now, I spend 8-20 days (depending on the detail). I have definitely seen the way of contour shading, and how it can make drawings look so life-like.

I see your Taylor Swift drawing above, and I am very impressed by how well you caught her likeness. Catching someone's exact likeness is always a struggle for me. You also do a wonderful job with hair, and have learned that drawing the shadows and fading into the highlights give it life and dimension.

2 things I believe would improve this drawing are:
1. Contour shading of her face. Tell me where her cheekbones are. Tell me where the light source is. And so on.
2. More detail and clean lines in her eyes. I can't tell how much is the drawing, and how much is the scan/photo, but her eyes look a bit smudged or blurry. And the outer corner of her left eye sort of disappears. I can't tell if it's because it's meant to be hidden by her hair, or what. Just a little finishing there could add a lot.

Keep up the great work, I love it!

Thank you...and yes, patience is a HUGE key to successful drawings. lol I'm slowly learning that. :)

Yeah, it is hard to get the eyes, lip, etc to look exactly like someone, but I was pretty happy with this when I was finished, although I still feel like it doesn't look exactly like her. :(

I realize there isn't really any shading on the face, which is because I was going for the "minimalistic" look, if you think it needs more shading on the face, I think I could work on that. :)

The eyes....yeah, I'll look at my drawing and see...by the 4th day I was ready to just get it finished. haha So I may have gotten kind of sloppy, so I will definitely look and see what I can do. :)

Thank you so much for the help!
